Blues, Blues and more Blues. Texas-style. Hammond organist Mike Flanigin (The Drifter, Jimmie Vaughan Trio, Billy Gibbons’ BFG’s) delivers 10 tracks of deep blues from the Lone Star State. Featuring Sue Foley (Best Traditional Female 2020 BMA’s) on guitar and Chris ‘Whipper’ Layton (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble) on drums. Cut live in the studio. No overdubs, no tricks. It’s pure, ‘in-the-moment’ blues by 3 of today’s finest Texas Blues players…with music that still packs the dance floors down in Texas: Lightnin’ Hopkins, Juke Boy Bonner, The Nightcaps, Lazy Lester, Lightnin’ Slim, Guitar Gable and more. Rough and ready to ride the range, this is West Texas Blues
Mike 'The Drifter' Flanigin has become one of the shining lights of the Texas Blues scene. It’s been 30 years in the making. He’s a masterful player of the Hammond B3 organ, and is known for his organ trio work… both on his own, as well as with Texas guitar legends Jimmie Vaughan and Billy Gibbons. He has performed onstage with ZZ Top, Steve Miller, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall I & II, Bonnie Raitt and many others. From dancehalls and beer joints across Texas… to Madison Square Garden, Royal Albert Hall, The LA Forum & The Montreux Jazz Festival.
Originally from Denton, Texas…he has been part of the Austin Blues scene since the early 90’s. In 1991 he toured as a guitarist with Los Angeles-based The Red Devils, supporting their Warner Brothers debut King King. Upon returning to Texas, he joined the Antone's Nightclub house band, backing up many of the original blues legends from Junior Wells to Earl King. It was there that he made a career-defining switch from guitar to Hammond B3 organ.
In 1999, jazz organ legend Big John Patton took Flanigin under his wing and showed him the ropes on the B3. The giants of the B3 were still walking the earth at that time… Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff… all were gracious enough spend some time with Mike, and pass along the tradition.
In 2009, Mike teamed up with Jimmie Vaughan and formed a trio that continues to this day. The results of which can be heard on ‘Live At C-Boys’, The Jimmie Vaughan Trio featuring Mike Flanigin. In 2013, Flanigin met Billy Gibbons which led to their own trio dates, ZZ Top sit-ins (including an appearance on the ZZ Top ‘Live At Montreux’ DVD) and a collaboration on Billy’s solo album Perfectamundo. Mike Flanigin’s first-ever solo album The Drifter was released in 2015. Rolling Stone Magazine called it a singular vision “…with Flanigin creating his own version of atmospheric Americana.”
July/2020 brought the release of Flanigin’s latest album, West Texas Blues. Debuting #8 on the Billboard Blues Chart and #1 on the iTunes Blues Chart. It’s 10 cuts of deep blues from the Lone Star State. Mike Flanigin on Hammond B3/Vocals and featuring Sue Foley on guitar and Chris ‘Whipper’ Layton on drums.
