Poorly managed asthma is a regrettable cause of death. Something that should easily be preventable with regular, annual asthma review, checking a patients inhaler technique, their peak expiratory flow rate, and the effect of asthma on their day to day activities using the RCP Three Questions
Ensuring Adequate asthma control is hugely important, not merely for mortality, but also to improve a patients quality of life. If poor asthma control is affecting sleep, exercise, and causing a strain to the patient, there are things that should be addressed in the annual review.
Similarly, a personal asthma management plan should be agreed upon, allowing the patient to be able to adjust their care and improve their home management
