The Nissan GT-R LM Nismo is a sports prototype racing car built by the Nissan Motor Company and their motorsports division Nismo. Designed for the Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) regulations of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the GT-R LM was unique amongst Le Mans Prototypes at the time for utilizing a front-wheel drive, front mid-engine layout for its internal combustion engine, as opposed to the rear mid-engine layout used by nearly all other competitors in the category. In addition to the engine's drive to the front wheels, a powerful flywheel-based kinetic energy recovery system regenerated energy from front wheel braking, which could be fed to a complex auxiliary rear-wheel drive system.
NÜRBURGRING/NORDSCHLEIFE
Since the opening of the modern Grand Prix circuit in 1984, the international professional racing series have raced exclusively there, as have most national series. Touring car series and, in particular, amateur sports events continue to prefer the varied Nordschleife.
On April 28, 2007, Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld drove three demonstration laps in the 2006 BMW Sauber F1. Due to delays for advertising shots during the three laps, relatively low-grip demonstration tires from Bridgestone , a short gear ratio, and a maximum raised body, Heidfeld achieved a best lap time, as stated by BMW, of 8:34 minutes. This was about 20 seconds slower than the fastest cars in the endurance championship. It was the first time in over 30 years that a current Formula One car drove on the Nordschleife.
During a VLN race on March 29, 2015, the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 of Briton Jann Mardenborough lifted off the front of the car in the Quiddelbacher Höhe section of the track without any external influence, sailed upright in the air and was catapulted over the safety fence after hitting the tire stack, performing several rolls. One spectator at the airfield was killed and two others were injured. Mardenborough himself survived the accident unharmed. As an immediate measure, the DMSB imposed speed limits on certain sections of the track. In the Hocheichen / Quiddelbacher Höhe sections , the maximum permitted speed was 200 km/h, and in the Schwedenkreuz and Döttinger Höhe / Antoniusbuche areas , it was 250 km/h. However, this only applied to DMSB events; other series such as the World Touring Car Championship were not affected. After modifications in the 2015/16 winter season, the FIA and DMSB again granted the track approval without speed limits.
To date, more than 140 people have been killed in motorsport events and tourist rides at the Nürburgring.
