Bodmin Jail: The History, Hangings and Hauntings

Bodmin Jail opened in 1779, born from John Howard’s prison reforms. Over the next century and a half it saw overcrowding, public hangings that later moved behind the walls, Navy discipline, and a final wind-down to decommissioning in 1927.

The site has since lived many lives — as a fishmonger’s, garage, badminton court, even The 99 Club — before a £65m restoration in 2021 reopened it as a hotel and haunted attraction.

In this Underworld Uncut Halloween special, Mark Rablin and Kirsten Honey from Bodmin Jail and paranormal investigator Jason Higgs revisit the history, the last execution in 1909, and the encounters that still leave people looking over their shoulder.
