Christian Friedrich Segelbach was a multi-faceted individual indeed. As a matter of fact, today he isn’t remembered for being a composer, but rather, as a philosopher, theologian, a wildlife naturalist, a professor, and a privy-councilor in Russia. He studied at the universities of Erfurt and Jena, earning degrees in both theology and philosophy. In 1794, he became a teacher of mathematics and poetry: obviously, he had a grasp of many subjects. While living in Russia, he taught the Philosophy of Religion and the History of the Church. Segelbach died in Saint Petersburg in 1842. I was unable to find any information about his musical education, but it must have been solid, for this set of twelve variations – Segelbach’s Opus 2 – is a very good composition.
