When it comes to Colon and Rectal Cancer the easy thing is that the TNM criteria is the same and the Staging is the same.

Now...how does that TNM staging break down?

When it comes to T stage what does that mean?

It means that the cancer has now penetrated as far as the submucosa and depending on how far it has penetrated it can be a T1 ,T2, T3 or T4 cancer!

What does the N stage mean? This is how many lymph nodes are positive and we will also talk about tumor deposits.

Finally M stage, this is for distal metastases. Are there distal metastases or is there peritoneal involvement?


Once we understand the TNM staging system we can look at survival. We can answer questions about how nodal spread or metastatic spread to other organs impacts how long an affected patient may survive?

Of course when we talk about survival we're talking about populations, not individuals and this point is extremely important!
