SAGHAR SIDDIQUI

Saghar Siddiqui, one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices in Urdu poetry, was born in 1928 in Ambala, then a part of British India. A gifted child with a soul steeped in verse, he began composing poetry at a young age—crafting wooden combs by day and rhyming heartache by night. Though he first adopted the pen name Nasir Hijazi, it was as Saghar Siddiqui that he etched his mark on the landscape of Urdu literature. With his slim frame, curled hair, boski shirts, and melancholic charm, he lit up mushairas in Lahore, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Gurdaspur with his ghazals, delivered in a voice as lyrical as the lines he penned. But behind the rising star was a man burdened with tragedy. From literary success to despair, from editorial brilliance to street-side mushairas under flickering candlelight, Siddiqui’s life was both a celebration and a lament of the poetic soul. Today, he rests in Lahore’s Miani Sahib graveyard, remembered as a timeless Urdu poet who gave voice to sorrow and beauty like few others ever could.

ye kināroñ se khelne vaale
Duub jaa.eñ to kyā tamāshā ho

banda-parvar jo ham pe guzrī hai
ham batā.eñ to kyā tamāshā ho

aaj ham bhī tirī vafāoñ par
muskurā.eñ to kyā tamāshā ho

terī sūrat jo ittifāq se ham
bhuul jaa.eñ to kyā tamāshā ho

vaqt kī chand sā.ateñ 'sāġhar'
