Step 9: Provide Emergency Care and Transport
Provide access to skilled emergency treatment for life-threatening complications. Ensure that staff are trained in timely recognition of potentially dangerous conditions and complications and in providing effective treatment or stabilization, and have established links for consultation and an accessible and reliable system of transport.
This step is presented by Dr. Robert Tillya, of Ifakara Health Institute, Dr. Vijaya Krishnan of the Sanctum Natural Birth Center, and Michelle Skaer Therrien representing the University of California San Francisco Safe Motherhood Program. The presentation was prepared with Professor Suellen Miller, Director of the UCSF Safe Motherhood Program and Dr. William Keenan and Dr. Douglas McMillan, representing the International Pediatric Association.
