Four ex-correctional officers sentenced for death of Robert Brooks

Four former Marcy Correctional Facility officers were sentenced Friday for their involvement in the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks.

"I have never seen so many lives destroyed in a moment," Judge Robert Bauer said in Oneida County Court.

Anthony Farina and Nicholas Anzalone, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, were sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Michael Mashaw, who pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, received a sentence of 3-9 years in prison.

David Walters, who also pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, was sentenced to 2 1/3-7 years in prison.

All four men declined to speak in court.

Brooks' son, Robert Jr., was in court but didn't speak. All four attorneys for the defense would have needed to agree for him to speak. Instead, the prosecution read a prepared statement on his behalf.

"Last December, I watched as officers beat my father to death on camera. What they took from me, and from my family, can never be returned or made right. Still, 22 years in prison is a long time, and we are heartened that these officers are facing real accountability–not just a slap on the wrist. To Officers Anzalone and Farina, I pray your loved ones never have to endure the kind of pain I have experienced. All of this could have been avoided if you and your fellow officers just did your job. My dad would be alive. I pray this case teaches others that they can’t treat incarcerated people like animals. I pray this case sparks real conversation about the need for change to the prison system that you are entering, this time wearing green instead of blue."
