The meaning of give way line is to give way to traffic on the main road, and it also means if it's clear to go then you should go and not stop. Junction with a stop line you must stop. It is by law you must stop on a junction with a stop line. The reason of a stop line with a stop sign is because the junction is not safe unless you stop and see if safe to go.

There are two types of junction on a junction with a give way line. One is an open junction and one is a closed junction. Closed junction is where you can not see early who is on the main road because of obstruction on one side or both sides. And an open junction is where the junction has no obstructions on both sides and the view is clear on both.
