TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION:
Total internal reflection is the phenomenon in which waves arriving at the interface from one medium to another are not refracted into the second medium, but completely reflected back into the first medium. Total internal reflection is when light completely bounces back into the material it came from, instead of passing through to another material, because it hits the boundary at a very steep angle (greater than the critical angle) and is traveling from a dense (higher refractive index) to a less dense (lower refractive index) substance, like light in water hitting the surface at a shallow angle
Examples of where total internal reflection is used:
Optical fibers:
Light bounces off the inside walls of optical fibers, allowing it to travel long distances for things like the internet and phone calls.
Diamonds:
The sparkle of a diamond is due to its many internal reflections, which causes light to be trapped inside and bounce around before coming out the top
