Shelly Manson, who runs Hemlock Aquaculture with her brother Kirk Manson, discusses their new fish farm, which started in 2023. As complete novices—with Shelly transitioning from an 18-year career as a college softball coach—the farm was built by her father and uncle after her father expressed a desire to start a fish farm. Hemlock Aquaculture raises red ear shell crackers for pond stocking and largemouth bass for food fish.
The operation utilizes fully enclosed raceways, which are a trough system made of durable plastic with a rounded bottom. While the rounded bottom makes harvesting difficult, it creates a secure and comfortable environment that the fish enjoy. Air is pumped into the raceways from an air blower, creating a flow that turns the water over every two and a half hours, supplying the fish with fresh water from eight feet down. Auto-feeders are used to feed the fish up to 10 times a day, and shades are installed because bass prefer shaded areas, which encourages them to eat and helps deter predators. The raceways include a quiescent zone where solid waste gathers, which is collected and analyzed under a Warner grant to be repurposed as agricultural fertilizer.
