Step by Step - How to Make Custom Furniture Molding

Step by step guide on making custom furniture molding for a table or other woodworking furniture. This table has stacked crown molding and dentil molding, giving it an amazing look!

I’m making a walnut end table that coordinates with my existing console table. What I think sets this table apart is the custom furniture molding. The table will have some really cool custom stacked molding along the apron, under the table top.

I made this molding by making two types of molding profiles: crown molding and dentil molding. I used the router table to route the crown molding, using multiple passes because it’s such a large router bit. Much safer this way.

Once the molding was routed, I cut it to size using the table saw. This means cutting the crown molding at the proper angles so that it fits on the table.

To make the dentil molding, I planed down some lumber so that it’s slightly thinner than the crown molding. I made a jig that attaches to my miter gauge. It has a cut out for the dado stack, and then a piece of wood that is the same thickness as the dado stack. I was then able to cut the dentil molding, using the stop block.

I highly recommend making your own custom furniture molding. It’s not difficult to do and it will give your furniture a unique look that’s personalized just for you!
