​The Flying Fortress & the Forgotten Fort | Hidden History of Reigate Hill

Step back in time on a walk across Reigate Hill, where quiet footpaths hide some remarkable and often forgotten history.


In this video, I explore Reigate Hill Fort, a late-Victorian mobilisation fort built in 1898 as part of London’s last-ditch defences. We take a look at the tool store, magazine, and casemates, and talk about why this fort was built, how it was meant to be used, and why it was ultimately never needed.


The walk also takes us to the moving site of a World War II B-17 Flying Fortress crash, where an American bomber returning from a mission over Europe struck the hillside in 1945. Today, a simple memorial marks the spot, quietly remembering the crew who lost their lives.



We then head through the gate onto Reigate Hill itself, following the North Downs Way up to the Inglis Memorial, before taking in the sweeping views across the Surrey countryside and the Weald below.


This is a relaxed walking vlog, but one rooted in real history — from Victorian defence planning to wartime tragedy — all on one hill with more stories than most people realise.
