Introducing the Gumamela project! My new project celebrating musical connections between the Philippines and Mexico. Yes, we definitely have a lot in common musically. Our harana music for example, sounds eerily similar to old Mexican songs in melodic style, rhythmic patterns and vocal inflections. But it doesn’t stop there. Traditional dances and religious music also reflect shared cultural values and experiences between the two countries.
I’m excited and privileged to team up with these incredible musicians on the top of their game. Arwen Lawrence and Jorge Liceaga, a.k.a. Cascada de Flores, a premiere group championing folkloric Mexican music, jazz singer Charmaine Clamor known for “jazzipino”, son jarocho master Jorge Mijangos, and seasoned Latin jazz bassist Greg Kehret.
We are recording an album and will play a few concerts this year. DM me if you’d like us to perform in your town! And yes, everybody sings in this outfit
