Taiwan’s women’s sumo team has claimed a gold and a bronze medal at an international sumo competition in Osaka. The haul marks Taiwan’s best in 11 years. One of the medal-winners was Chiu Jo-tzu, who snatched Taiwan’s first gold in the 55kg category. Let’s hear from her.

Our coaches worked really hard, taking time from their weekends to train us. My style is more deflective. When someone charges at me, I redirect them and throw them off. That’s the strategy my coach and I came up with.

I didn’t get in my head. I just told myself that I would adapt on the spot to any kind of opponent I’d face.

By the time you reach the semifinals or even the quarterfinals, your opponents are wrestlers who’ve placed in the world cup. Since Japan is the birthplace of sumo, the level of the competition is even higher than in the world cup. Seeing our hard work pay off makes me extremely happy.

The next stop for the sumo team is the world cup in Bangkok this August. With such a good showing in Japan, the team is hoping to put up a good fight in Thailand.
