This little guy has sensory issues that are making it hard for him to find verticality.
He is visually impaired and the position he wants to be in is supine—on his back on the floor so he can move around for sensory input.
His therapists and family are all working extremely hard to try to do what’s best for him so we decided to try to put the puzzle pieces together this week.
As therapist’s , we really have to think about what piece of equipment is the most important for the child… At that child’s current status. A gait trainer for this child is not beneficial as he is unable to tolerate being upright for any length of time. Appropriate equipment considered would be something he can sit in and a stander.
It’s not a secret that I hate insurance. But when working with insurance to get appropriate equipment for a child, we have to go the extra mile in getting an appropriate device instead of what requires less fighting with an insurance company.
Going back, it may be very difficult to get this sweet boy a stander but his therapist is going to try! As a therapist what would you do in this situation?
We will work on setting up a home exercise program for Mom and Dad so that this little guy can tolerate sitting upright.
What are some common issues you have with insurance companies?
