Watch this thrilling video of a medium length (approx. 7 min. of train), 2-engine BNSF freight train as it travels in a easterly direction through the town of Fort Madison, IA, crossing a street, crossing the mighty Mississippi River over the historic Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge (aka Fort Madison Toll Bridge), and finally enters the unincorporated town of Niota, IL. Fort Madison is the town where the only battle west of the Mississippi River in the War of 1812 took place.
The Fort Madison Toll Bridge was built for the former Santa Fe Railway and is a tolled, double-decked swinging truss bridge over the Mississippi River. The bridge is about 1 mile (1.6 km) long and has a swing span of 525 feet (160 m). When it was constructed in 1927, it was the world's longest and largest double-deck swing-span bridge. Two lanes of road traffic are carried on the upper deck, and a double-track railway occupies the lower deck. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
BNSF Railway privately owns the bridge, which is the river crossing for BNSF's Chicago-Southern California main line, known as the Southern Transcon. Amtrak's Southwest Chief, which travels 2,265 miles (3,645 km) between Chicago, IL and Los Angeles, CA, traverses this bridge. There is an Amtrak Fort Madison train station 2 miles west of the bridge. Between 40 and 100 trains crossed the bridge each day in 2022.
This 2-engine BNSF freight train is hauling only hopper railcars of primarily BNSF and possibly other companies. All 2 engines are in the front of the train.
Enjoy watching this entertaining video of this 2-engine BNSF freight train breaking the stillness as it traverses through this small town in the central US!!!
