The Pace Report: "A B-3 Of Sorts" The Akiko Tsuruga Interview.
Organist Akiko Tsuruga has been elevating the music of jazz since she's arrived here in the US 20 years ago. The Osaka, Japan native hit the ground running catching the eye of notable jazz stalwarts over time. She's recorded and toured with the likes of the late Grady Tate and Jimmy Cobb. Her mentors are NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson and legendary organist Dr. Lonnie Smith.
Akiko's story began as she studied organ at the age of three at the Yamaha Music School in her native Osaka. She then attended the Osaka College of Music and after graduating decided to take a leap of faith and come to New York City.
In 2020 she was voted Downbeat Magazine's Critics Poll as Rising Star organist.
I recently sat down with Akiko at The Roxy here in New York and we discussed her role as a bandleader as well as reflect on her mentors Dr. Lonnie Smith and Lou Donaldson.
