Traditional Cuban folkloric music with a high-energy, danceable feel. This track features a female Spanish vocal and a driving mid-tempo groove.
WHAT IS NENGÓN?
Nengón is one of the roots of Cuban Son and Changüí. It developed in Oriente, Cuba, evolving into Son in Santiago and into Changüí (after merging with Kiribá) in Guantánamo.
Originally, Nengón was played with a Tingotalango—a makeshift bass instrument made from a bent tree branch, a rope, and a rock in a hole for tension. Over time, the Marímbula replaced it, and eventually, the upright bass became standard.
Modern Nengón is typically performed by a Changüí ensemble, but with simpler rhythms and little to no syncopation. Clave, as we know it today, didn’t exist yet, so the rhythm is played in straight quarter notes.
Like Rumba and Punto Guajiro, Changüí was a social music style—if you went to a "Changüí" in Guantánamo, you were going to a party where this music was played.
