Filmed on Sunday, October 20 2024, I drive around the University of Louisville to see what's going on.
Higher education in Louisville began in 1798 as Jefferson Seminary was established by the Kentucky General Assembly. The college would close in 1829.
In 1837, the Louisville city council established the Louisville Medical Institute which was led by Charles Caldwell. Three years later, Louisville College was established. In 1844, Louisville College acquired the land and buildings of the former Jefferson Seminary.
In 1846, the Kentucky Legislature combined Louisville Medical Institute, Louisville College, and the newly created Louisville Law School into the University of Louisville. The three schools maintained separate finances and Louisville College would shortly close.
In 1931, the university established the Louisville Municipal College for Negroes in an effort to avoid desegregation. That university was dissolved in 1951 when the university officially desegregated.
The university joined the public university system of Kentucky in 1970 and enrollment skyrocketed.
In 1997 the university hired athletics director Tom Jurich who raised over $100 million dollars and started Louisville on the path to becoming an athletics powerhouse. The men's basketball team has won two national championships, made 9 Final Four appearances, and is ranked 5th in total NCAA Tournament wins. The women's basketball team has been ranked in the top 10 and in 2008 broke the Big East attendance record for women when 17,000 fans watched Louisville defeat Kentucky. The track and field and baseball teams have also won national championships.
From 1895 to 2016, a confederate monument was located on campus, built before the campus grew to envelop the surrounding land where it stood. After protest in 2016, the statue was moved from its original location to Brandenburg, Kentucky.
The university's School of Medicine is responsible for several innovations in the medical field. The University Hospital established the first emergency room in 1911, the first "autotransfusion" in 1935 (a process where the patient receives their own blood), the first successful hand transplant in 1999, and the first self-contained artificial heart transplant in 2001.
The university's alumni include NFL star Johnny Unitas and politician Mitch McConnell.
