How do we mathematically describe the local change in shape of a body? We use the Deformation Gradient Tensor, denoted by $\mathbf{F}$.In this lecture, we derive {F} as the gradient of the motion mapping function. We explain why {F} is a "two-point tensor"—meaning it bridges the reference {X} and current {x} configurations. This tensor is the starting point for calculating all strain measures, from Green-Lagrange to Almansi.
