Within ghost hunting and parapsychology, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are sounds found on audio recordings that are interpreted as spirit voices. Parapsychologist Konstantins Raudive, who popularized the idea in the 1970s, characterized EVP as typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase. Prior to Raudive and earlier proponents of EVP, Thomas Edison surmised we could use recording devices to contact the dead, or as he framed it, the “living impaired”. While some people consider EVP a legitimate form of scientific research, others attribute it to nothing more than auditory pareidolia (hearing patterns in random noise) or equipment artifacts.

This collection contains audio recordings of EVP as well as compositions inspired by the phenomenon.

Technical notes: The dynamic range is deliberately wide in this collection in an effort to encourage different forms of listening.
