-- The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands did not make the Northern Mariana U.S. owned, but rather U.S. administrated. The Northern Mariana Islands did not become U.S. owned until the 1970s, when the islands included in the trust began voting on whether to become U.S. territory, independent, or freely associated with the U.S. The Northern Mariana Islands voted to become a territory.
