SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The gold chariot the Sacramento Kings rode for their 2-game win streak rolled through the gates of Golden 1 Center as a pumpkin on Wednesday night.
The Kings fell 112-100 to the Phoenix Suns, but a 41-16 first-quarter output had Sacramento on its heels the rest of the game. The Kings (5-14) turned the basketball over 7 times and did not get 1 assist in the first 12 minutes.
Mark Williams had 21 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block to lead the Suns (12-7), who have won 9 of their last 11 games. Collin Gillespie had 21 points, 9 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals for Phoenix.
Devin Booker added 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Dillon Brooks had 13 points, and Jamaree Bouyea added 11 points off the bench. The Suns forced 17 turnovers and collected 14 steals.
Keegan Murray had 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals for the Kings, who won their last 2 games. Russell Westbrook had 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Malik Monk had 15 points off the bench. Precious Achuiwa contributed 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The Suns made it clear in the 1st quarter that they would play up-tempo, force turnovers, and sink 3-pointers whenever possible. Phoenix outscored the Kings 41-16 in the opening quarter with ease.
The Suns made 16 of 26 (53.8%) shots from the field, 6 of 14 (42.9%) in 3-point territory, and all 7 attempts at the charity stripe while forcing 7 turnovers. With 2 triples each, Booker had 12 points, and Gillispie added 11.
Malik Monk’s basket with 2:27 remaining in the 1st half cut the Suns' lead 60-42, but Phoenix was not done, yet. The Suns finished with a 7-0 run to lead 67-45 at the break.
Booker made 5 of 6 shots at the foul line, while Brooks made all 4 of his attempts. The Suns scored 30 points in the paint to the Kings’ 24 and had 12 fastbreak points to Sacramento’s 2. Sacramento turned the basketball over 10 times in the first 24 minutes.
The Kings started to breathe again when Murray made back-to-back 3-pointers to trim the Suns' margin 72-63 in the 3rd frame. Sacramento cut the lead down further when Monk’s 3-pointer made the score 76-68 at the 2:25 mark.
The Suns bumped their advantage back up to 14 points before escaping with an 83-73 margin to end the 3rd quarter.
Jamaree Bouyea’s made 3 gave the Suns a 93-75 lead early in the final quarter before the Kings marched back to cut it by 8 points on 2 free throws by DeRozan. The Suns went on an 18-10 spurt, completed by O’Neale’s triple with 1:52 remaining, signaling an end to any effort forward by the Kings.
The Kings have lost 9 of their last 11 games.
