AP Precalculus 1.13 Function Model Selection and Assumption Articulation Overview:
In this lesson, students practice choosing the most appropriate type of function—such as linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, or logarithmic—to model a real-world situation. The main focus is on recognizing key features of a problem (such as growth, decay, symmetry, or asymptotes) and matching those features to the correct function family.
Students also learn how to make reasonable assumptions when creating a model. For example, they may assume that growth continues smoothly, that a denominator never equals zero, or that certain values are excluded because they do not make sense in context.
Most of the work in this lesson is done using a graphing calculator (TI-84+). Students input data from word problems, graph the results, and test different models (polynomial or rational functions are emphasized). By comparing graphs and interpreting calculator outputs, they determine which function best represents the situation and explain why.
The overall goal is not only to find a model that “fits,” but also to be able to explain the choice and the assumptions made in constructing that model.
