Welcome to a new restoration. Today we have a vintage "Stillson's Patent" #8 Pipe Wrench Walworth Mfg Co Boston U.S.A.. Although not marked with a patent, this wrench is described in a catalog listing for Walworth "Stillson's Patent" pipe wrenches, as published on page 36 of the 1878 Walworth catalog, so it can have over 100 years. As always, I see that tools bought online in bulk are missing parts. Adjustable wrenches seem to be the ones missing the most tips, probably due to use and abuse :)).
The Walworth Manufacturing Company was a historic Boston-based company known for manufacturing plumbing supplies and tools, most notably the Stillson pipe wrench.
The company was started by James J. Walworth and his brother-in-law Joseph Nason as Walworth and Nason in New York in 1841. They opened a plant in Boston on Devonshire Street in 1842.
After financial issues in the 1850s led to the partners splitting, Walworth reformed the Boston operation as J. J. Walworth & Co., which was later reorganized as the Walworth Manufacturing Co. in 1872.
The company's manufacturing facility in Cambridge moved to South Boston around 1910. Walworth ultimately left Boston in the 1950s, relocating to Texas.
Stillson pipe wrench: In 1869, employee Daniel Stillson invented and licensed his design for the adjustable pipe wrench to Walworth. The wrench became one of the company's most famous products.
The Walworth Company is still in business but is now based in Mexico and serves a global market. It specializes in the manufacturing of industrial valves.
