Trail Overview:
Distance: The Leopard Trail spans approximately 68 kilometers (42 miles) over four days of hiking.
Elevation Gain: The trail encompasses varying elevations, with a cumulative ascent and descent of approximately 2,000 meters (6,561 feet).
Huts: Hikers will encounter three remote huts: Doodsklip, Vaalboom, and Bergplaas. Your bags and cooler boxes with food are transported each day to the next hut, so you only need to hike with your day pack and essential items such as a first-aid kit, hat, sunscreen, warm top, and rain jacket dependent on the weather, snacks, lunch and your water mostly.
Daily Itinerary:
Day 1: Start at Doodsklip
Distance: Roughly 15 kilometers (9.3 miles)
Elevation: Moderate ascents and descents
The trail commences at Doodsklip, where hikers are greeted by an arid landscape of rugged rock formations. The day's hike takes you through valleys and along riverbeds, introducing you to the diverse plant life and unique geology of the area. Doodsklip Hut provides great accommodation offerings, including sleeping platforms, basic kitchen facilities, and shared bathroom amenities.
Day 2: Doodsklip to Vaalboom
Distance: Approximately 17 kilometers (10.6 miles)
Elevation: Varied terrain with some steep ascents and descents
The trail leads through expansive landscapes, including river crossings and mountain slopes. Vaalboom Hut, located near a picturesque stream, offers hikers a comfortable resting place. The hut features sleeping platforms, kitchen facilities, and bathroom amenities, allowing you to recharge for the next day's adventure.
Day 3: Vaalboom to Bergplaas
Distance: About 23 kilometers (14.3 miles)
