Gunnera Passage (identified as Gunnera manicata but please see update below) at Trebah Garden, near Falmouth, Cornwall: experience the other-worldly atmosphere beneath tent-like leaves, duck and weave past strong, prickly stems. These impressive plants are native to south-east Brazil, where botanist Joseph Libon discovered Gunnera manicata growing in the Serra do Mar. Also known as Brazilian Giant Rhubarb, or Dinosaur Food.
December 2023 Update
According to the RHS, Gunnera manicata (non invasive) is no longer in cultivation, and plants going by this name are actually an invasive hybrid of G manicata and G tinctoria, called Gunnera × cryptica. It seems G manicata was lost from cultivation not long after it was introduced. This may explain why Libon's description differs a little from those seen today. The advice from DEFRA is to treat the hybrid as an invasive species. Emphasis is for current plant owners to manage x cryptica responsibly, and it is to be banned from sale.
