It is well-known among scholars of both Okinawa and Southeast Asian history that the former was a principal facilitator of trade in the region between the late fourteenth and late sixteenth centuries, creating a prolific trade network that facilitated cross-cultural exchange and economic prosperity, stretching as far as Rome. The reasons behind the demise of this trade network, however, have never been made clear.
