In the late 1980s, a new fitness movement swept across China, and became one of the most popular sports in the history of Chinese fitness-hula hoop. At that time, the hula hoop was very simple. A thin plastic tube was formed into a circle, and some small beads were filled in the exquisite tube, so that it would whine when shaken. When a group of people shake, they will hear a spectacular "hula". At that time, there were hula hoop performances at many evening parties, single turn, team turn, and multiple turns on one person. At the 1990 Asian Games, the hula hoop was so flamboyant that almost every room had a hula hoop or two behind it to "turn" at any time. In the Spring Festival Gala in 1994, Ouyang Beni, a 13-year-old girl from Shanghai who created 98 Guinness World Records for hula hoop, appeared on stage and caused a sensation. A few months later, another Shanghai girl performed 144 hula hoops on a CCTV program, setting a new Chinese record. At the time, the longest continuous rotation of the hula hoop was 78 minutes, created by Zhang Yaru, a 10-year-old girl in Shanghai.
