Beyond The Binary ProtectingLGBTQ+ Health, Rights & Representation in a Shifting Political Landscape
As part of SUNY Downstate’s Pride Month observance, Beyond the Binary convened clinicians, educators, researchers, legal experts, and community leaders for a compelling dialogue on LGBTQIA+ health equity. Far more than a symbolic gathering, the forum reinforced Downstate’s steadfast commitment to affirming dignity, expanding inclusive education, and safeguarding access to care amid a shifting political and legal climate.
Moderated by Dr. Efekona Nuwere of the School of Health Professions, the discussion highlighted the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ patients and healthcare professionals, the life-saving potential of inclusive training and mentorship, and the growing threats to gender-affirming care and preventative services.
National civil rights advocate Alfonso David, Esq., offered a powerful legal and social justice perspective, framing the issues within the ongoing struggle for constitutional protections and equitable healthcare. His remarks echoed the forum’s core message that advocacy, education, and community-centered care are essential to protecting rights and realizing SUNY Downstate’s mission to #KeepCareClose for all.
