Newfoundland Part 3a Insectarium, Grand Falls Windsor, Botwood

Did I mention that the mile long Squires Park entrance road was worse than the potholed main road? But the nights were peacefully quiet. The Insectarium was a real treat. Finding some very fresh vegetables and strawberries augmented our evening meals.
One of our two 20lb tanks of propane were filled in St. Anthony at a building supply company, a rather unusual location. But here in Grand-Falls Windsor the Canadian Tire came through. This was the first we’d heard of the Beothuk people and their hard-luck story. They were just unwilling to adjust to the white-man’s ways. Google Maps took us on a very long, dirt road track to the salmon interpretation center. I kept looking at the paper map and the Google display and kept yelling ‘This is NOT the easiest route!’ And it wasn’t! We took the PAVED shorter trip back to the TCH. This was not the first time on this trip that Google Maps SHOULD NOT BE BELIEVED.
History can be found everywhere, even in the most remote areas of the world. Who would have believed that Botwood (had never heard of it) would play such a critical role, not only in local NFLD, but in trans-Atlantic flying boat history and World War II defense. The Flying Boat Museum’s corrugated exterior wall murals depicted different scenes when looking from different directions. A very intriguing artistic presentation.
