What does it mean to sponsor an immigrant? What is an I-864 form? What is an affidavit of support?
Anyone who has been part of an immigration process through a family member knows that at some point, the U.S. citizen or permanent resident petitioner must sign an I-864, Affidavit of Support, saying they are sponsoring this immigrant.
So what exactly are you signing?
It has to do with the petitioner's financial status saying, "I will take care of this immigrant, so they do not become a public charge."
