On the freezing dawn of 21 January 1793, Louis XVI is taken to the guillotine in the Place de la Révolution. Once a shy and indecisive king at the head of a bankrupt kingdom, he failed to reform France, saw the Revolution erupt, tried to flee, became “citizen Louis Capet”, and was tried as a traitor. In the square, he tries to proclaim his innocence, but the drums drown him out. The blade falls, the crowd roars, and with the king’s head the Ancien Régime ends and the new French world begins.
