Alkanes are produced by electrolysis of sodium or potassium salts of carboxylic acid . Its khown as Kolbe's electrolysis. This video deals with the complete mechanism . Electrolysis is the passage of electric current through an electrolyte to produce a chemical change . It's a decarboxylative dimerization of two carboxylic acids. Reaction mechanism is a two stage radical process.
Electrochemical decarboxylation gives a radical intermediate then two such intermediates combine to form a covalent bond .
Example : Acetic acid yeilds ethane and carbon dioxide .
