Val Kilmer's shootout scene in Heat (1995) is considered one of the most realistic in movie history. His character, Chris Shiherlis, performs a lightning-fast magazine change during the downtown LA gun battle—a move so precise and authentic that it's been shown to U.S. Marine recruits as an example of how to reload properly under fire.

To prepare for the role, Kilmer and the rest of the cast underwent extensive weapons training. Director Michael Mann brought in former SAS sergeant Andy McNab and technical adviser Mick Gould to train the actors over three months, first using live ammunition, then blanks. This helped the actors move and shoot like real professionals.
