The revered Sree Nhangattiri Bhagavathy Temple in Nhangattiri, Kerala, just 3 kilometers away from Pattambi, holds a special place among temples for its unique feature: the deity faces west. Nestled along the serene banks of the Bharathapuzha river, this temple exudes tranquility.A remarkable aspect of this temple is its connection to the Bharathapuzha river, which flows from south to north, reminiscent of the Ganga in Kashi. Bathing in this river near the temple is considered as auspicious as bathing in the holy Ganga. Legend has it that Parashuram, upon reaching this sacred spot, was deeply moved by its divine aura and decided to bathe here. During his bath, he witnessed a divine radiance, prompting him to erect an idol in reverence.
Sree Nhangattiri Bhagavathy temple is one of the oldest Durga Devi temples in Valluvanad region of Malabar. It is also one of the rare temples where the Devi is facing West.Nhangattiri temple is one of the most important and famous among the 108 durga temples erected by Sage Parashuraman. Sitauated on the banks of Bharathapuzha,this temple has a peaceful ambience.

According to folklore, when the Pandavas installed an idol in the Tirumittakod Anchu Moorthy Temple, Draupadi advised Parashuram to do the same here. To honor Draupadi's advice, a lamp is lit in her memory to this day. Apart from the main deity, the temple also houses several upa devatas, including Lord Ganapathy, Lord Subrahmanyan, Lord Ayyappan, Lord Dharmashasthaavu, and Lord Hanuman.
