Ground penetrating radar, or GPR, for the nondestructive evaluation of concrete is a relatively new application using an older technology.

The most common application of GPR evaluation of concrete includes detection and mapping of reinforcing steel bars and tendons, but advancements now allow today’s GPR units to assess uniformity and thickness of the concrete, identify location of conduits and ductwork, as well as detect cracks and voids within the concrete structure.

Newer Ground Penetrating Radar units, like the Proceq GPR Live, overcome earlier technical limitations including limited detection capabilities, and units were difficult to use and required experienced operators to interpret data.

When a GPR unit directs high-frequency radio waves into a concrete structure, the waves reflect as they encounter objects and various densities. Raw radar reflections are processed by sophisticated software into easy to understand graphics, simplifying the interpretation of data.

Engineers can assess the quality and uniformity of the concrete. Rebar in advanced stages of corrosion can be detected, allowing correction before major damage occurs in the structure.

The Proceq GPR Live features a Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave (SFCW) circuitry to achieve the greatest penetration depth with the highest resolution possible using a single antenna GPR.

Plus, the Proceq GPR Live uses an augmented reality (AR) programming to create clear and understandable hi-res 2D and 3D graphic displays of embedded items that can be overlaid on the scanned concrete areas.
