Sri Lankan lawmakers chose acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the country’s new leader on July 20, 2022, hoping his long experience in government will help pull Sri Lanka out of a crippling economic and political crisis. The six-time prime minister garnered 134 votes in the 225-member parliament, despite public anger with the ruling elite after months of severe shortages of fuel, food and medicines. Wickremesinghe took over as acting president, after former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country on July 13.
