Built to answer the needs of the people during the height of post-war austerity, the Reliant Regal, Rialto and Robin were a lineage of three-wheeled family cars that exploited a loophole in the British motor licensing system that meant they could be procured on a cheaper motorbike license, thus allowing for huge cost savings for working class buyers.

The result was the Reliant firm climbing the ladder of Britain's automotive industry, so much so that in the mid-1970s, the company was the second largest domestic car builder in the UK behind British Leyland, though once the oil crises had seen a seismic shift towards economy cars, the three-wheelers lost their competitive edge and would soon face a precipitous fall from grace.
