The reason I chose folk paintings as my subject matter was because they allowed me to use my imagination to my heart’s content. If you look at folk paintings from the Joseon Dynasty, they contain the spirit of the times. I thought that the iconographic meanings shown in folk paintings were appropriate subjects for expressing life in this era as a ceramic artist. The characters in my works sometimes fulfill wishes that I wish to achieve in reality and sometimes ask about the well-being of people I cannot meet. This is the result of reinterpreting them as motifs that relieve the artist’s own emotions as a medium for communicating reality and fantasy. The process of reviving traditional folk painting characters with my own personality and creating three-dimensional forms was also interesting.

민화를 작업소재로 선택한 이유는 무한한 상상을 펼칠 수 있게 해주었기 때문이었다.조선시대 민화를 보면 그시절의 시대정신을 담고있다. 나는 민화에서 보여지는 도상학적 의미가 도자작가로서 이 시대의 삶을 표현하기에 적절한 소재라고 생각했다.내 작품 속 캐릭터들은 현실에서 이루고자 하는 소망을 이뤄주기도 하고 만날수 없는 이들의 안부를 묻기도 한다.이는 현실과 환상을 소통하는 매개체로서 작가자신의 감정을 해소해주는 모티브로 재해석한 결과이다.전통적인 민화속 캐릭터를 작가만의 개성으로 재탄생 시키고 3차원적 형태를 만들가는 과정 또한 흥미로웠다.
