DIY Air Conditioning Recharge Guide + Problem Diagnosis - BMW E46 M3 AC Regas with Vevor Gauges
In this video, we tackle a non-functioning air conditioning system on a 2002 BMW E46 M3 – though the process applies to most E46 models and many other cars with similar AC setups.
Here's what I used in this video:
VEVOR 4 Way AC Manifold Gauge Set for R134A (Use VEVR5OFF to get 5% OFF)

With unusually hot weather making the car unusable, we set out to diagnose and recharge the system using a Vevor AC manifold gauge set, R134A refrigerant, and UV dye to help trace potential leaks.
We start by explaining the main components of an automotive AC system (compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, and dryer) and outline how to approach diagnosing problems – whether it’s a failed component, an electrical fault, or, most commonly, a refrigerant leak. With no diagnostic trouble codes showing and the system not engaging, we check for pressure at the service ports and find the system effectively empty.
Using the Vevor gauge set, we walk through the correct setup and connection to the car, explain the purpose of each valve and line, and demonstrate how to safely add refrigerant. We also inject UV dye to help locate any leaks later on. Once pressure is restored, we test the system, confirm that the compressor engages, and take live high- and low-side pressure readings to verify that the AC is functioning correctly.
The result is an E46 M3 blowing ice-cold air again – but we remain cautious, knowing the refrigerant escaped once before. Over the coming weeks, the plan is to check for leaks using the UV dye and black light for a permanent fix.
This guide is intended for DIY enthusiasts looking to understand how their car’s AC system works and how to recharge it safely. It shows that with some affordable tools and care, you can diagnose and address many AC issues yourself.
