In an interview where he addresses and clarifies three of the key controversies about the destruction of churches and attacks on the Christian community in Manipur, whilst stating that there is an “undercurrent of religious intolerance” behind the ethnic Kuki-Meitei clashes in Manipur, the Archbishop of Imphal has said that the 249 Meitei churches in Imphal and the surrounding valley, that were destroyed in the first 36 hours (May 3rd/4th/5th), could not have been done by the Kukis because they were, at the time, fleeing for their lives. Archbishop Dominic Lumon said “other elements” did it and, when specifically asked if he was pointing the finger of suspicion at Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun, two Meitei based organizations, he said “they could have done it” but added “we have no direct evidence”.
