This video is for you if you grew up walking on eggshells around highly emotionally immature and inconsistent parents or caregivers -- and/or -- if you are autistic, adhd, AND *chronically hypervigilant*.

Chronic hypervigilance is its own unique trauma response I am calling the "Fish Response" -- a response, which precedes the other common trauma responses like fight, flight, freeze and fawn.

"I call this combination of predicting, making meaning, and responding to threat the Fish Trauma Response.

A trauma response is an automatic, largely unconscious, self-protective response we have developed to attempt to protect ourselves and to help us access safety. This particular response reminds me of the behavior of ectothermic fish.

Since they can’t regulate their body temperature on their own, they survive by regulating their temperature by either approaching or avoiding the sun, by basking in warm pools of sunlight or migrating to cooler waters.

 As highly vigilant people, we do much the same as ectothermic fish to approach or avoid our primary sources of heat, our caregivers, as the caretakers of our nervous systems and our source of safety and/or fear or danger.

1) We reflexively and unconsciously predict threat by assessing other people’s verbal and non-verbal signs or emotional temperatures,
2) we make meaning and create a story about the reason for the threat,
3) we respond by either approaching or avoiding the threat to try to regulate our internal safety and sense of self."

The Fish Trauma Response:

A response defined by being chronically hypervigilant around other people or environments, in which we reflexively predict threat from verbal and non-verbal signals, make meanings about the threat, and then respond, using any of the other trauma responses in our attempt to seek safety.
