Bushmills is in the county Antrim, Northern Ireland and is the oldest licensed distillery in the world . It dates back to 1608 when a license was granted to Sir Thomas Phillips by King James I to distil whiskey on the land where Bushmills is today. It was on my list to visit while in the UK; in fact we wanted to get to the Cork, Dublin and the Belfast area but things happen when your travelling. We still thought we could shorten the visit to Ireland and still get over there. In the end we had to sacrifice crossing the Irish Sea to make the rest of our tour work. So I have it on my priority bucket list and it's in the planning stage.
Instead of specifically referring to Ireland or Northern Ireland, I will just refer to the two of them throughout this video as Ireland, as the Emerald Isle was known historically before being divided by a border.
It's funny how some folks view the two main players in Irish whiskey, and I'm talking about Jameson and Bushmills. The idea that Jameson is "Catholic whiskey" and Bushmills is "Protestant whiskey" is a myth, rooted in the historical and geographical context of Ireland. The funny thing is Jameson was founded by a Scotsman and the founder of Bushmills was Irish.
White Bush (the Bushmills Original Irish Whiskey) might not be a favorite anymore now that I have opened the door to so many other Irish whiskies. Having said that I like the ten, and even more the twelve and I have always liked the Black Bush. Well how about the sixteen?
