Acting Advice: How To Cry On Cue

As a professional actor, your job is to cry on command in a believable way without pushing your emotions. As a casting director, there is nothing worse than watching an actor force their way through an emotional scene.

Many actors I coach have personal audition techniques to help them get to the point of crying on cue, but sometimes they just can't fully get there.

My 3 quick tips in this video are a good reminder when you get an emotional audition.

My biggest advice:
✅ Sit on the emotion in the scene until it naturally boils over, don't control when it comes
✅ Save your full-blown cry for your close-up on set
✅ Turn your emotions off once your scene is complete
✅ Don't overshare your personal emotional story with the callback room


There was an actor we auditioned for that came into the callback telling the whole casting room why they loved the audition scene and how it made them feel. They gave us an entire backstory that was very inappropriate. At the end of their audition, they were crying uncontrollably and could not turn off their tears to the point we were worried about their mental state. It was uncomfortable for everyone involved.

When this happens, we feel like the actor will be a lot to handle on set and end up not hiring them because we need to trust that they can turn off their emotions so we can re-direct them and have them hop back into their scene without feeling they need to go back to their trailer to get themselves together.

Remember, the audition room, callback room, and set are professional spaces and it's imperative you find the balance between the two in the entertainment industry.
