From an early age, Kublai showed a strong affinity for Chinese culture, surrounded by a cohort of Han Chinese advisors, including the monk Haiyun who migrated from yanjing and his disciple Zicong-Liu Bingzhong, who later became a renowned statesman. Distinct from Southern Chinese in the Southern Song Dynasty area, these advisers imparted considerable Confucian knowledge to Kublai.
