La letra de la canción trata del sentimiento mientras uno está en un concierto de metal, lo que en inglés se llama headbanging, mover la cabeza sin parar durante conciertos de este estilo. La palabra inglesa «whiplash» en castellano significa «latigazo». Además ya casi al final en la letra dice que "Nunca nos rendiremos porque somos Metallica" (We will never quit 'cause we're Metallica), siendo esta la única canción de la banda que dice "Metallica". A veces, Hetfield cambia la letra de esa parte diciendo: "Nunca nos rendiremos porque VOSOTROS sois Metallica (We'll never quit 'cause you're Metallica).

Según Kirk Hammett, Whiplash era una de las canciones favoritas de Metallica para Kurt Cobain.
