Fall is my favorite time of year and Sedums take center stage in the garden. The Hylotelephiums (Sedums) are temperate-climate succulents that tolerate extremes in temperature, making them perfect for a wide variety of garden environments. Sedums prefer full sun and well-draining soil. These plants do not need fertilizing and are resistant to pests and most plant diseases. This year, my garden has experienced an above-average amount of rain, which has proved challenging for my garden plants, including the Sedums. I have noticed a minor amount mildew on the leaves, which will not harm the plant all that much. Sedums are perennials, meaning that they will return next year and grow larger with each passing year. I have both upright and ground-covering types, both of which complement other plants including roses, ornamental grasses, prairie natives and even the vegetable garden. Sedums are also great pollinator plants, attracting masses of bees, butterflies and other insects. Sedums do not have much for scent, although they do have interesting foliage and flowers that come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. There is a “style” of sedum for just about any sunny area of one’s garden. @gardenwithanne
